Just got ui 9 and so far im fairly disappointed with alot of the design choices. As the title says notification now stack by app and just makes scroll through notifications feel clunky to me. Is there a way to turn it off or revert back to how it was prior?

No. This is how Android works, and has been this way for several major software versions. Notifications are grouped by app to condense notifications and prevent long, clustered chronological lists. You can expand the stacks by swiping down on the or using the arrow on the banner.

It's a very simple matter to unstack them and if you want to see your notifications in chronological order, download Good Lock's NotiStar module and you will be able to see them and preserve them in unstacked, plain text, chronological order.  You can also view them unstacked if you look at them the instant you hear the notification tone.

Guess I'll give that a try. Though the fact we have to download a whole other app for it just seems bizarre to me.

You don't *have* to download the app, it's an option if you want to see your notifications unstacked.  You can continue to receive the stacked notifications and unstack them at will.  Good Lock and its modules is Samsung's official customization suite of apps.  All of which give you more options and control over your interface environment.  You can find it in the Galaxy store.

I am also coming from an older model and am disappointed with the stacked notifications. I feel like people don't remember how the notifications use to be displayed... it was not a clustered list, it grouped notifications by app and those cards took up just about as much space as the current cards. Expect the older cards showed the last couple items, like the 2 most recent emails, or the most recent message from 2 separate conversations. If there were more, it would have a +# and a drop down carrot indicator. So now the notifications take up just as much space, if not more b/c of the bulky shape and spacing and show less information.

Yes, you don't "have" to try to fix this and you don't "have" to download an app, but it feels bad that a feature was removed that people clearly miss enough for it to be in a official Samsung app.

There is noting wrong with stacked notifications.  I, for one, find them less messy and more convenient.  There's a circled number that tells you how many there are from each app, and the ones that are stacked separate easily when you tap the bubble.  Much, much, much, much easier than trying to hit the exact spot on the teeny, tiny little arrow next to grouped notifications on the older UIs.  Just because something is different, doesn't mean it is worse.  Don't like it?  Switch brands.
