I am about a year and a half into owning my Samsung Odyssey G80SD 32" and I've started to experience display issues that I feel might be an instable display port or firmware.

Issues:

  • A brief static flash appears in the center, bottom, or right side of the screen.

  • At random, the entire screen goes black for 1–2 seconds.

  • The static flash looks similar to a momentary signal integrity drop from the display port.

  • On HDMI 2.1, I do not get the static flash, but I still get occasional full black‑screen events.

  • Occasionally failing to wake from sleep resulting in DP port link or HDMI not detecting PC. (Fix) You have to unplug the DP or HDMI from the Samsung Odyssey G80SD to resolve it as simply unplugging from the GPU doesn't seem to do anything.

Cables Tested: I’ve tried multiple DisplayPort cables from Cable Matters and StarTech (DP 1.4a through DP 2.1), as well as several HDMI 2.1 cables. The behavior persists across all of them.

Hardware Setup:

  • GPU: MSI RTX 4090 Suprim Liquid X (Driver 581.80) Newer drivers cause instability in **bleep** Divers 2.

  • Monitor: Samsung Odyssey G80SD 32"

  • Firmware: 2115

Addtional info:

I absolutely adore this display; I haven't had any dead pixels or any burn in on the display. I use this display every day and always turn the display off when I leave the room.

I am hoping someone has some sort of insight into what maybe the issue weather that's a firmware issue with firmware 2115 or perhaps the display port on the monitor is starting to fail.
I have tested this display with my RTX 4060 on my other PC and still had the same issues.

    I have not.

I talked to Samsung support and they told me version 1305 fixes this particular issue.
I'm on version 2123 of the firmware.

I have tried various Cable matters 1.4A Vesa certified cables as well as a Star Tech 2.1 Vesa certified cable.

I have tried two separate computers one with an RTX 4060 and the other with an RTX 4090.

I also still have the sleep issue that was supposedly fixed.
If the PC falls asleep Odyssey can't detect any input from the display port or HDMI cable. I have to manually unplug the power for a few seconds to fix it.

I have also tried a factory reset as suggested by a technical support agent I was speaking with last night which did not work.

This issue has only started to occur as of a few months ago about 20 months into owning the display.

Update: Firmware 2123 seams to have stopped HDMI from having issues, for the time being I'll just use HDMI with my 4090.
Both 4090 & Odyssey G80SD have HDMI 2.1 which means you get the full 48Gbps bandwidth.

I'm wondering if the DP 1.4A on my 4090 just can't handle display stream compression.
I'll have to look for an adapter that allows me to split an active HDMI connection to my streaming PC & Display at the same time that way I can continue to stream without glitches.

I'm also having this 4k @240hz intermittent black screen issue despite trying all the various suggestions folks have made to possibly fix it.

The only thing that seems to 'work' is using an HDMI 2.1 cord.  However, the colors for my particular game (Guild Wars 2) are noticeably 'washed out looking' compared to how vividly they appear while using the Display Port (probably due to HDR not being supported on HDMI?).  And so this isn't a good work-around for me.

Some folks have suggested trying to run 4k @120hz, but that doesn't work either as I still experience intermittent black screens.

The one other thing I haven't tried yet is using a shorter DP cable (but I'm guessing the issue will unfortunately still persist).

I will also note that I'm running an NVIDIA gpu, and that does seem to be one thing in common with others who have this issue (meaning apparently AMD gpu users aren't experiencing this problem).
