This is very disappointing. Years ago Samsung stopped having their own cloud backup for pictures/videos and moved everyone over to OneDrive. That has worked fine for me. But as of Oct 1 the gallery auto sync to OneDrive ended. I still have the OneDrive app set to upload any new pictures. But the bad thing is if I delete a picture/video on the phone, it's still on OneDrive taking up space. So have to go in there and delete it manually. So today I tried Google Photos and let it backup everything. But it has the same issue, that a deleted picture/video on the phone will not automatically delete it from Google Photos and has to be done manually.
I think this is pretty stupid. A few months away from 2027 and Samsung can't have proper cloud sync backup for pictures/videos.

Did you go into the notification settings for the Messages app and make sure they're allowed, that you have the notification style set to default, that you have sounds and vibrations on, that you have prioritize notifications on, that you don't have excluded conversations, etc.?

Google is a backup, not a sync. It's there so if you "accidentally" delete a photo, or delete a temporary photo from your phone, it remains in Google and can be retrieved. If you want to delete a photo from both your phone and the backup location, you must delete it from Google photos, not the gallery app. Deleting it from Google deletes it from your phone and from the backup, deleting it from just your gallery will only delete it from your device while it remains in your backup. There is some chatter about the new update adding a Google sync for photos, and I truly hope it's an option, not automatic because I would hate to be deleting photos from my phone when I believe there is a backup.

In all the years I have had an Android phone with Google backup active, I've still never managed to use more than 12% of the 15 GB of free storage space. Admittedly, I do not take very many photos or videos. I do not need to keep every photo or video I've ever taken on my phone at all times, so I sometimes move anything I am not frequently accessing to an off phone device (flash drive, computer, CD), and I delete temporary photos such as screen shots from within Google Photos, so that I only have to delete them once. You can move stuff off your phone when approaching your storage limit and then delete them from Google, but if you add them back, Google will back them up again. Better to remove only infrequently accessed photos.
If you happen to be an Amazon Prime member, you have unlimited photo storage and 5 GB free video storage, with an option not to automatically save videos. I believe every Amazon account holder still gets 5 GB of photo storage - not a whole lot, I know, but it's an alternate backup for important photos.
