I am submitting a formal complaint regarding a serious camera failure on my Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra (SM-S928B) following the One UI 8.5 software update.
My phone is approximately two years old and is a premium flagship device that originally cost well over $1,000. The camera is one of the principal features of this product. It has now been effectively unusable in normal operation for approximately 60 days.
The standard Samsung Camera application displays:
“Warning — Camera failed.”
I have performed extensive troubleshooting, including:
Clearing the Samsung Camera cache and data.
Resetting Camera settings.
Rebooting the device repeatedly.
Testing Samsung diagnostic modes.
Testing the cameras through Samsung Expert RAW.
Testing different camera modes and individual lenses.
Performing Samsung's recommended troubleshooting.
Ultimately performing a complete factory reset of the phone.
The factory reset did not fix the problem.
This is particularly significant because Samsung's own diagnostic and alternative camera modes demonstrate that substantial portions of the camera hardware remain operational.
The front camera works.
Rear Portrait mode works and can take photographs.
Samsung's factory diagnostic camera mode can access the rear camera.
In Expert RAW, multiple rear lenses can operate and take photographs, while the ultrawide camera has demonstrated a repeatable initialization failure.
Nevertheless, launching the standard Samsung Camera application in normal Photo mode results in “Camera failed.”
This behavior strongly indicates a software, firmware, camera-driver, or camera-module initialization problem associated with the One UI camera system rather than a simple situation in which the entire camera hardware has physically failed.
More troublingly, this does not appear to be an isolated complaint.
Samsung's own Community forums contain reports from Galaxy owners describing materially similar problems after One UI 8.5: normal Camera producing “Camera failed,” diagnostic camera functions continuing to operate, Portrait or Selfie modes continuing to work in some cases, and factory resets failing to resolve the problem.
Some customers have gone through the enormous inconvenience of backing up and completely factory-resetting their phones only to discover that the camera remains broken.
A smartphone camera is no longer merely for taking vacation photographs. Camera functionality is integrated into everyday authentication and commerce.
Customers depend on it to:
Scan QR codes.
Log into computers, applications and messaging services.
Scan documents.
Deposit checks.
Authenticate accounts.
Scan payment and transportation codes.
Communicate through applications requiring camera access.
Conduct business.
Photograph accidents, documents and other time-sensitive information.
Consequently, leaving a premium smartphone without reliable camera functionality for weeks or months substantially impairs the usefulness of the entire device.
Samsung should not simply direct affected customers through the same cache clearing, rebooting and factory-reset procedures when multiple users report that these procedures do not resolve the failure.
I am requesting that Samsung:
Escalate this issue to the One UI/camera firmware engineering team.
Investigate the relationship between One UI 8.5 and these camera initialization failures.
Publicly acknowledge the issue if Samsung determines that the update is responsible.
Release an appropriate firmware/software correction as soon as possible.
Provide a no-cost repair or replacement for affected Galaxy devices if the One UI update has caused or exposed a camera-module failure that cannot be corrected through software.
Stop requiring affected customers to perform repeated factory resets when Samsung already has reports showing that a factory reset may not resolve this particular problem.
A premium Galaxy device should not lose one of its fundamental functions following an official Samsung software update and then leave the customer without a meaningful remedy for approximately two months.
I am requesting a substantive technical response and resolution—not another generic instruction to clear the Camera cache, restart the device, enter Safe Mode, or perform another factory reset.

This is the only way for Samsung to diagnose the problem for a potential fix for an update.

I took mine to a certified Samsung technician just today, they replaced 2 rear cameras and I still have the same issue.
Samsung, please fix this.
