Before update had an opaque half circles on each side of screen where when pushed would bring up a screen to turn off phone adjust volume and at least 6 other functions. How can I retrieve?

Looks like you had the assistant menu turned on. Go to settings/accessibility/interaction and dexterity/assistant menu, turn it tap the tile and then tap on "select assistant menu on and select your assistant menu items and then place the menu where you want it.
