Fit 3 not working correctly

I bought a Fit 3 about 2 weeks ago. I basically just want to use it to track steps.  

If I move around constantly it seems to be fine.  However if I am inactive, say sleeping or watching TV for 30 minutes, it does not start counting steps again...for hours.

Before I junk this thing for a watch that does the one thing I ask of it, anyone know how to fix this?  Is it something simple I missed?
