Hi Members 👋🏼, I have been busy these two weeks, but now I finally have time to share another post with you all. I gathered all the information and hopefully this post helps every member keep their batteries healthy. If I pointed out something not right, welcome to drop a line to discuss.
Many people notice their smartphone battery life deteriorating significantly after just a year, often blaming the phone manufacturers for making devices less durable. However, incorrect charging habits slowly degrade the battery chemical structure.
I will try to list six common mistakes that reduce battery lifespan by half, along with correct methods to keep your phone healthy.
The Six Charging Mistakes and Correct Practices
1. Letting the battery drop to zero percent 🪫
The mistake ⚠️: Waiting until the battery turns red or using the phone until it completely shuts down on its own. People often do this because of an outdated belief leftover from older nickel based batteries that had memory effects.
Why it is bad 🤔: Modern lithium ion and lithium polymer batteries have no memory effect. Draining them completely drops the voltage to an extremely low level, causing a massive chemical and physical shock when you finally plug it back in, which ages the internal materials rapidly.
The fix ✅️: Charge as you go. Keep your battery in its comfort zone of 20% to 80%. Avoid letting it die completely.
2. Plugging in the wrong order 🔌
The mistake ⚠️: Plugging the charging cable into the phone first and then plugging the charging brick into the wall outlet. Am I picky? 😅
Why it is bad 🤔: Plugging an active charger or appliance into a wall outlet creates a brief, volatile voltage spike known as an electrical surge or transient current. Doing this while it is already connected to your phone sends microscopic electrical shocks to the phone power management system, leading to inaccurate battery percentages and potential component degradation over time.
The fix ✅️: Plug the charger into the wall first, wait 1 to 2 seconds for the current to stabilize, and then connect the cable to your phone. When unplugging, disconnect the phone from the cable first.
3. Leaving the phone plugged in overnight to 100% 🛌🌙
The mistake ⚠️: Habitually plugging the phone in right before bed and leaving it charging all night so it hits 100%.
Why it is bad 🤔: While modern phones stop drawing massive current at 100%, background apps and network connections continue to consume tiny amounts of power. Once the battery drops slightly to 99%, the protection circuit kicks in to top it back up to 100%. This creates a constant cycle of micro discharging and recharging overnight under high voltage stress, which accelerates chemical aging.
The fix ✅️: Try not to keep it at 100% constantly. If possible, unplug it before bed or enable your phone built in Optimized Battery Charging feature, which pauses charging around 80% and finishes right before you wake up. For Samsung users, you can turn on Protect Battery in settings.
4. Charging the phone in places with poor heat dissipation 🌡
The mistake ⚠️: Sliding your phone under your pillow, on a mattress, or on a thick blanket while it is charging.
Why it is bad 🤔: Energy conversion naturally generates heat during charging. Placing the phone on soft, insulating materials traps this heat, causing the temperature to rise rapidly. High heat is a battery worst enemy, accelerating chemical reactions, degrading capacity, and in extreme cases, creating internal short circuits or fire hazards.
The fix ✅️: Always charge your phone on a flat, hard, well ventilated surface like a nightstand or wooden desk.
5. Using the phone for high intensity tasks while charging 🎮
The mistake ⚠️: Playing graphically demanding games, scrolling social media, or watching high definition videos while the phone is plugged in.
Why it is bad 🤔: This forces the battery to act like a 2 way valve, simultaneously receiving power from the charger while draining power rapidly for heavy processor usage. This dual stress causes severe voltage instability and extreme overheating. Under high heat, the processor may also throttle, causing lag.
The fix ✅️: Give your phone a rest while charging. If you must answer a call or message, it is fine, but avoid long, high drain operations. For gamers, you can enable the Samsung battery bypass feature, which is the Pause USB Power Delivery setting in Game Booster, when gaming.
6. Using cheap, unbranded, or low quality replacement chargers and cables 💲
The mistake ⚠️: Buying cheap, unbranded charging accessories for a few dollars online or at random stalls because original manufacturer parts are expensive.
Why it is bad 🤔: Cheap chargers cut corners on materials and lack crucial safety chips like voltage protection, over current protection, and short circuit protection. This results in unstable power output, which can damage the battery or motherboard, ultimately costing far more to repair than a certified original accessory.
The fix ✅️: Buy chargers and cables from reputable brands that feature safety standard certifications, such as safety marks compliant with local regulations like Canadian standards.
Thank you for reading. Hope the above tips help. 😃

I've recently purchased the Tab S11 and found out after the fact, that the battery has a rating of only 1,200 charge cycles to 80% capacity, whereas the Tab S10 has 2000 charge cycles to 80% capacity. So I've been sorting through info to try to maintain the best battery health.
