Hi everyone,
I'm hoping someone here (or perhaps a Samsung moderator) can clarify what is supposed to happen to existing Samsung Gallery libraries stored in OneDrive once Gallery synchronization ends on September 30, specifically for users who want to continue viewing and managing their existing cloud-only library directly within Samsung Gallery.
I've used Samsung Galaxy devices since around 2010 and have been using the official Samsung Gallery → OneDrive synchronization for years. As a result, I now have close to 2 TB of photos and videos in OneDrive. Most of that library is cloud-only, but until now I have still been able to browse and manage everything directly through Samsung Gallery without the files needing to be stored locally on my phone.
As I understand it, after September 30, the files stored in OneDrive will remain safe there, but they will no longer appear in Samsung Gallery. At the same time, Samsung is now introducing Gallery Cloud Sync with Google, which allows Samsung Gallery to sync photos, videos, albums and related data with a Google Account.
What I can't find anywhere is an explanation of how existing Samsung Gallery users are supposed to migrate their current OneDrive libraries into this new Gallery Cloud Sync system so that their existing cloud-only media can continue to be viewed and managed through Samsung Gallery.
This is particularly important for anyone whose cloud library is larger than their phone's physical storage.
My phone has 256 GB of storage and currently only around 77 GB available, while my existing Samsung Gallery library in OneDrive is close to 2 TB. Samsung's current suggestion to use "Download originals" before the OneDrive integration ends therefore isn't a viable migration solution for me. I physically cannot download the entire library onto my phone.
Even trying to migrate it in batches would mean repeatedly downloading a portion of the roughly 2 TB library, uploading it to the new service, deleting it locally to free up space, downloading the next portion, and repeating that process potentially dozens of times.
So my main question is:
How are existing Samsung Gallery users supposed to move a cloud-only library from OneDrive into Samsung Gallery Cloud Sync with Google when that library is much larger than the physical storage of their phone?
Will Samsung provide a direct OneDrive → Gallery Cloud Sync migration option or another cloud-to-cloud transfer method?
And if not, is there an official way to transfer the existing OneDrive files so that Samsung Gallery will recognize and display them as cloud-only Gallery media again, ideally while preserving albums, capture dates and other metadata, favorites, etc.?
Simply leaving the files in OneDrive isn't really a replacement for the current functionality. I know the files themselves won't disappear, but the whole reason I've used this integration for years is that my complete library can be viewed and managed inside Samsung Gallery without needing to fit on my phone.
I also didn't independently choose OneDrive as a separate place to build a 2 TB photo archive. The files are there because OneDrive was the cloud service officially integrated into Samsung Gallery.
When Samsung moved Gallery storage from Samsung Cloud to OneDrive, there was a migration solution for existing users. It seems like there should be an equivalent migration path now that Samsung is moving away from OneDrive again, especially for users whose cloud libraries physically cannot fit on their phones.
I've submitted this question directly to Samsung support as well, but with only a few days left until September 30, I'm wondering whether anyone here has received a concrete answer about this yet.
Thanks!

Your photos will remain on your phone and in your gallery. You will have to make sure Google sync is on by going to settings/accounts and backup/Google Drive. Tap on "back up data" and make sure there is a checkmark next to Photos & videos. If not, tap that item and turn it on. Google backup should be on by default, and your photos should have been backing up to Google all this time, regardless of whatever other backup locations you had, so no migration is necessary. Google does not keep your backup photos in "libraries" or albums unless you arrange them that way within Google Photos. Your photos are organized by date by default. You can change the settings in the Google Photos app on how they appear in your view when you open the folder.

No. Gallery will always be there, it's the container for photos stored on your phone. Google cloud is only backup.

I am hugely disappointed, how is the switch so poorly planned. I have to migrate my whole family because they are not tech savvy and there is no migration? Samsung you **bleep** up. We need a migration tool from onedrive to google asap. This id unacceptable. And as many people said: If you have a large Photo Collection it is impossible to download everything onto the phone. Please fix this.
Also is there a timeline for how long the partnership with Google will last? Bc if you switch again in a year I don't wanna go through the same pain again. Both of my parents are due for a phone upgrade and I am considering to migrate them to an iPhone at the moment. There continuity is more likely and since I have to go through the migration pain myself anyways there is nothing holding me in the Samsung Ecosystem. I am very disappointed.

Your photos should still be retained in OneDrive even though the sync is severed. You just have to view any photo that is not stored on your phone in the OneDrive app. Any photo stored on your phone will automatically be included in Google backup and when you get the prompt to sync, you can just activate the sync process - bingo - photos migrated. All my photos that were synced with OneDrive are still in OneDrive. I turned off the sync a long time ago - way before they announced the end of the partnership. They also gave plenty of notice for you to find other means to protect your photos in the event of catastrophe.
