Is it normal for the S90f to render the dynamic mode unwatchable due to the "soap opera" effect? This can't be the best Samsung can do, right?

Hello Jeff55,
Welcome to our Samsung Community. We would love to assist you in providing the TV's picture quality information as requested. Upon review, yes, it appears to be considered normal for the Dynamic picture mode to produce a strong soap opera effect. This mode boosts brightness and artificially smooths motion, which many viewers can find unwatchable for movies.
To ensure you're receiving the best picture modes for your TV, you can review our article below for more accurate information about the concepts and purpose of each quality mode. Our Samsung TV's provide multiple options on how to get the most out of the TV, and your viewing experience.
